Description: To experience the true wilderness character of Glacier National Park one must spend a night or more in it's backcountry. The three-day backpacking trip offers a taste of Glacier's backcountry. Even though we can't give you an exact itinerary for your particular trip, many of these trips are in the Two Medicine Area since several short loops originate here in the southeastern corner of Glacier. We'll spend our days in subalpine and alpine meadows amongst Glacier's towering peaks. All of the camps in this area are located on lakes or streams. Distances covered on our 3-day hikes range from 4-9 miles per day and may involve some elevation gain but these trips are geared toward those with little or no backpacking experience and moderate conditioning. Your pack will weigh 35 to 40 pounds. These trips are a great introduction to backpacking or perfect for those with limited time to venture into wilds of Glacier for a memorable backcountry adventure. This trip leaves every Wednesday at 8:30 AM from our office in West Glacier. We will go over last minute details, view the Park Service's backcountry video and board our shuttle to the trailhead.

Meeting Notes: The day of the trip you should arrive at the office (1.5 mi. west of West Glacier on Hwy 2, across from Kruger Helicopter) by 8:30 AM to meet the guide. Departs Wednesdays starting June 2nd through September 15.

Description: This trip is very popular because it seems to have the right amount of time to be in the backcountry. You'll be visiting the remote parts of the park that most visitors driving through the park don't even know exist. Since itineraries vary, so do the mileage and elevation. Mileage will vary from 4 to 10 miles a day. A usual day of elevation will be about 500 to 800 feet elevation gain, while a more strenuous day will be a gain of 2000 to 3000 feet. Your backpack will weigh 35 to 40 pounds. You'll spend the days in subalpine and alpine meadows amongst Glacier's towering peaks. On the trail, your guide will point out features of interest, identify flora and fauna and be on the lookout for wildlife. You'll be camping in Glacier's beautiful, remote backcountry campgrounds. Our guides are great backcountry cooks so you'll enjoy delicious meals and be able to relax after a challenging day of hiking. All of the campgrounds are located by lakes or streams offering opportunities for swimming and or fishing.

Even though we can't give you an exact itinerary for your particular trip, we can give you an example of what you might expect on your 4-Day Adventure:

Here is an example of one of the options for a 4-day trip:

Day 1 - We meet at our office in West Glacier at 8:30 am, make our final arrangements for gear, safely store your extra luggage and then off we go to the Gunsight trailhead. We will start our 6-mile hike to Gunsight Lake from Going-To-The-Sun-Road at the Jackson Glacier Overlook. The trail follows the St. Mary River through a sub-alpine fir forest before gently climbing up along the east slope of Fusillade Mountain. We'll be leaving the forest and hiking through beautiful meadows with glimpses of Mt. Jackson and it's glacier. The campground is at the foot of Gunsight Lake which sits in a beautiful glacial valley with stunning views in all around.

Day 2 - After breakfast we'll break camp and head up the trail to Gunsight Pass, a steady 3-mile climb with a 2,500 foot elevation gain. At the pass we will most likely see mountain goat and we'll looking down on Lake Ellen Wilson where we'll be camping for the second night. After enjoying our trail lunch at the pass, we will start our 2-mile descent to Lake Ellen Wilson.

Day 3 - This morning we will start our 3-mile hike to Sperry Campground. Since this is a short hike we will have the option to hike up to Sperry Glacier after setting up camp for the third night. This hike offers breathtaking views of majestic peaks all around us, plus it brings us so close to Sperry Glacier that we can almost touch it.

Day 4 - Our last day on the trip is a 6-mile hike down the trail to Lake McDonald Lodge where we will meet our shuttle driver who has prepared a delicious deli lunch which will be a fine treat after 4 days in the backcountry. We'll be getting back to West Glacier by around 5 PM.

Glacier's backcountry is truly a place touched by magic and we look forward to sharing it with you.

Meeting Notes: The day of the trip you should arrive at our office (1.5 mi. west of West Glacier on Hwy 2, across from Kruger Helicopter) by 8:30AM to meet the guide.

Trip Duration: 6 Days

Price Adult: $840.00

Price Child: $840.00

Other Price: Backpack, Sleeping Bag and Tent available for rent.

Description: There are over 700 miles of hiking trail in Glacier National Park, so the best way to see it is on foot. The 6 day trip is for those who wish to forget about civilization for a while and to visit the more remote parts of the park. Mileage will vary from 5 to 12 miles a day. A usual day of elevation will be about 500 to 800 feet elevation gain, while a more strenuous day will be a gain of 2000 to 3000 feet. Your backpack will weigh around 40 pounds. All of the campgrounds are located by lakes or streams offering opportunity for fishing and/or swimming.

Even though we can't give you an exact itinerary for your particular trip, we can give you an example of what you might expect on your 6-Day Adventure:

Day 1 - Meet at our office in West Glacier at 8:30 am, we'll pack the final gear and then off we go in the van to Waterton, Canada ( don't forget your passport or birth certificate to cross the border ). We will take a scenic boat cruise down Waterton Lake back into the United States to the Goat Haunt Ranger Station where we will begin our hike. Our first night's camp on the shore of Lake Francis offers great fishing for rainbow trout in a spectacular setting with a snow fed waterfall at the head of the lake. After setting up camp we'll have one of our delicious backcountry meals.

Day 2 - After a leisurely breakfast, we'll break camp and head up the trail to Brown Pass and the Continental Divide gaining about 1,200 feet in elevation. Here you'll find some of Glacier's alpine splendor, a beautiful meadow filled with endless colors of wildflowers and some of those tasty huckleberries. If time permits we can take a side trek up to see Thunderbird Glacier and it's ice caves. Then just up around the corner from Brown Pass is a high mountain cirque called Hole In The Wall that was carved by glacial activity thousands of years ago. We'll camp in this lush alpine basin filled with several waterfalls ( one of which makes a great alpine shower, brrrrr...). The incredible view from here looks down on Bowman Lake and across to Weasel Collar Glacier.

Day 3 - If the huckleberry picking was successful at Brown Pass, then maybe we'll have huckleberry pancakes for breakfast, a backcountry delight. Then up we go over Boulder Peak. It's only about an hour's walk to the top and this is what they mean by sitting on top of the world. What a view! Back at camp the mountain goats have checked to see who's come to visit.

Days 4, 5 and 6 - Leaving the high country, we'll drop 3,000 feet in elevation down into the secluded Kintla Valley. The next two nights will be spent camping along the shores of Upper Kintla and Kintla Lakes with great opportunities for fishing and swimming. We'll wind up at the foot of Kintla Lake to meet our shuttle back to West Glacier. To top off the trip we'll have a stop at the remote town of Polebridge and try to figure out how they keep the ice cream frozen since the power company hasn't made it up the North Fork Valley yet. We'll be getting back to West Glacier by around 5 PM.

Glacier's backcountry is truly a place touched by magic and we look forward to sharing it with you.

Meeting Notes: The day of the trip you should arrive at the office (1.5 mi. west of West Glacier on Hwy 2, across from Kruger Helicopter) by 8:30 AM to meet your guide. Departs every Sunday starting May 27th through September 16th.
