Yosemite National Park has become widely known as a mecca for rock climbers and mountaineers from all around the world.  Its spectacular granite walls and domes provide some of the finest climbing opportunities to be found anywhere.  Enjoy the scenery, practice your photography, view the wildlife, gaze at the waterfalls, and learn to rock climb all on the same vacation.  A Yosemite National Park vacation can provide you the opportunity to experience so many different things.  If you are an experienced rock climber, then you'll enjoy the challenging climbs such as El Capitan.  If you are a beginner or have never climbed before, then you will enjoy the first class instruction and guided beginner climbs that Yosemite has to offer.  Rock climbing is an exciting sport, and Yosemite National Park offers the chance for beginners to learn the sport and go out on a beginner guided climb.

These classes are designed to give climbers of all levels new and extended skill sets.  Offered daily April thru October. Reservations are strongly recommended. All of the climbing classes average seven hours in length, unless otherwise noted, so prepare for a full day of fun. Classes meet daily at 8:30 am at either the Mountaineering School in Curry Village or in Tuolumne Meadows. The classes build upon each other and are designed to be taken sequentially, so that you can pick the single class you need, design the perfect multi-day seminar or come up every couple of weeks and complete the entire curriculum.


CLIMBING CLASSES

Classes are designed to give climbers of all levels new and extended skill sets.  Offered daily April thru October.

All of the climbing classes average 7 hours in length, unless otherwise listed, so be prepared for a full day of fun. Classes meet daily at 8:30 am at either Curry Village in Yosemite Valley or at the Mountain School in Tuolumne Meadows, depending on where you are scheduled. Reservations are strongly recommended. These classes build upon each other and are designed to be taken sequentially, so that you can pick the single class you need, design the perfect multi-day seminar, or come up every couple of weeks and get the entire curriculum.

Go Climb A Rock

This introduction to rock climbing is designed to be everyone’s first climbing class. Learn the basics, do a bunch of climbing and rappelling, up to 60 feet high.  “Go Climb a Rock” with the Yosemite Mountaineering School! The maximum ratio for this class is 6 students per instructor.

Crack Climbing

This is the second class, with more information and different climbing, but not much harder. Learn crack climbing, basic protection, and simple anchors. Do a bunch of climbing and rappelling. This class is a great way to bridge the outdoor gap for climbers who learned in a climbing gym. The maximum ratio for this class is 5 students per instructor.

Anchoring

The third class in the series should be required for all climbers, especially anyone aspiring to someday climb on their own. This class is also valuable for helping you evaluate your partners’ technical abilities. This is an intensive anchoring class covering top-rope and more advanced anchors, with more advanced climbing techniques covered as well. Strong anchoring skills is fundamental to climbing safety. The maximum ratio for this class is 5 students per instructor.

Leading/Multi-Pitch Climbing

This introduction to leading and multi-pitch climbing is a great introduction to “real” climbing. Instructors will cover multi-pitch climbing and rappelling techniques. The leading instruction includes orchestrating the pitch, protection for the leader, protection for the follower, aid moves, and leading strategies. Another essential class for anyone starting to climb on their own. The maximum ratio for this class is 3 students per instructor, so it costs a bit more.

Self-Rescue/Aid Climbing

This class is for climbers with experience who want to increase their options and their safety. All climbers should take a self-rescue class, even just for occasional practice, but this class is important for all of your climbing partners too. Learn and practice many handy and versatile, state of the art techniques.

Alpine Climbing Seminar

This 3-day seminar covers the techniques of modern alpine climbing with plenty of instruction and includes an alpine peak ascent.  Please call for prices and availability.

2-Day Big Wall Climbing Seminar

This special weekend seminar covers the techniques of state of the art Big Wall Climbing. Instruction covers: chocks and other non-destructive placements, pitons, hooks, copperheads, bolts, Big Wall anchors, haulbag handling and packing, aid climbing and big-wall techniques including leading, pendulums, ascending, hauling, hanging belays, bivouacs. Group seminars are organized on the nine weekends starting with the Saturdays listed below. Custom and private dates are also available. An anchoring class is a prerequisite for this seminar. Lodging and meals are not included. The maximum number of students per instructor is three.  Prerequisite: Anchoring Class.

Summer Snow Climbing

This full day class is a fun introduction to alpine snow and ice climbing. Learn how to travel, choose terrain and use ropes and ice axes while snow climbing. Increase your peak bagging and high-country travel safety. This course is a must for backcountry adventurers, as snow-laden slopes account for many accidents each year. Group classes are organized on the six days listed below. Custom and private classes are also available.

* Group Class Rates for beginning and intermediate classes are based on 2 participants. We will combine individuals to form groups. Private rates apply if there are less than two participants on a given day.

Deposit & Cancellation Policies: The climbing class is paid for in advance at the time of making a reservation, and the cancellation policy is at least 14 days prior to the scheduled class.
